The papers of this prominent American political activist and educatordocument three different issues of interest to Miller: U.S. race relations, Czechoslovakian independence, and life in the Soviet Union under Marxist leadership. The collection includes correspondence and articles related to his dissertation topic of the psychology of the American Negro and his teaching tenure at Black Mountain College, 1942-1947. A second group of materials relates to Miller's friendship with Czech politician, Thomas Masaryk, and it includes correspondence, a draft manuscript for a book about the struggle for Czech independence, and minutes for an organization known as the Democratic Mid-European Union, dedicated to preservation of. human rights for Eastern European peoples. The third group of materials includes correspondence to his wife during a 1925 trip to Russia, describing his impressions of life under Marxism.

Herbert A. Miller was a politically active educator born in 1875. Miller taught at Ohio State until controversy over his participation in Gandhi's campaign for independence caused his dismissal.
